July 2010
3rd – Savannah Jazz Band – old friends and a legend in its own lifetime, this band needs no introduction.
Effervescent traditional and New Orleans jazz with, in recent times, the odd R
& B number thrown in during the second set. On this occasion - in support
of Tim who has put in a power of work booking the bands over many, many years
– we are dedicating this session as a Charity Evening in support of the British
Polio Fellowship. NB £9
10th – New White Eagles Jazz Band – more rousing traditional sounds from a revitalised and respected Yorkshire group
now under the direction of ace trumpet player Dave Kendall. A first class performance
last year says it all.
17th – Oriental Jazz Band – you loved them last year and you asked us to book them again. A superb eight
piece group of young musicians from the Netherlands. Traditional jazz at its best
- but don’t forget the outstanding performance by the young lady vocalist – close
your eyes and Billie Holliday springs immediately to mind. Not to be missed. NB
£10
24th – Millennium Jazz Band – now it’s time for the annual appearance of this lively Midlands based traditional
jazz band led by versatile reeds player, Matt Palmer.
31st – Kid Boyd Jazz Band – it’s a five week month and here’s a real bonus. Another of our long standing
local groups - but one with probably the most enjoyable, wide ranging repertoire
of all. No prizes for guessing who’s on drums – yes, it’s the phenomenal Rod MacNamara
again!
August 2010
7th – Harlem Hot Stompers – now this evening will go with a swing! One of the North’s leading traditional
jazz bands led by reeds player Tony Foulkes and always a powerful, energetic,
no-holds-barred performance.
14th – Scott Hamilton Quartet – another session which had to be postponed in the dark, icy days of January.
But to make up for it, in much more temperate weather, we welcome one of the world’s
finest tenor saxophonists. On this occasion, the quartet includes John Pearse on piano, Dave Green on bass and Steve Brown on drums. Full house
guaranteed. NB £10
21st – Hot House Hooters – from Nuremberg in Germany and making a first appearance in Bozza, our spies tell
us that this is a lively group of younger musicians who have all studied music
formally. Led by trumpeter and founder Norbert Weigand, the band has played recently
at the prestigious Dresden International Dixieland Festival. Major influences
are given as Louis, Kid Ory and Jelly Roll Morton.
28th – Six in a Bar + Rosie – led by trombonist Mike Lovell this is versatile group with a distinctive and engaging
style of its own. Members include Willie Entwistle of Temperance Seven fame on reeds and Rosie
Harrison also on reeds plus vocals.
